Time to get Tidying….Declutter your office for a more productive work space

The reasons for tidying and decluttering your workspace are clear – numerous studies show that a clean and organised offices makes for happier, healthier and more productive workers.

A clean and clutter-free office is the key to a productive environment, giving employees more time to do their work properly and keeps distractions at bay. However, if having to declutter your office or company desk gives you as much stress as a messy workspace, then our step-by-step guide to office decluttering is just what you need!

  • Clear and remove

The first step is to remove everything (yes every single thing!) from your office or desk, so this means removing all items on your desk, in your drawers and on your shelves. Now is the time to give your desk and workspace a deep clean, and don’t forget to clean your computer and keyboard and mouse as these can be a breeding ground for germs!

  • Sort and assess

Now that all your items have been removed, it is time to sort and assess what you are going to do with each. We recommend sorting items into three piles:

  1. Keep
  2. Archive
  • Throw

Put items that you use frequently in the ‘keep’ pile. In the ‘archive’ pile put any files, documents and possibly equipment that you will need again at some point but do not require on a regular basis. If space is limited in your office, then consider renting self-storage space with us in one of our secure storage units. The ‘throw’ pile should include all the items you no longer use or need.

  • Rearrange and organise

Before putting back all the items you are keeping, spend time thinking about the layout of your desk and then rearranging everything so that things you frequently use are kept close to you, and items you do not need on a daily basis are put in drawer and shelves, keeping your main workspace clutter-free.

  • Divide and conquer

Use dividers, shelves, cabinets and other storage solutions to ensure everything is stored efficiently and effectively. This will mean you avoid messy piles of paper and documents on your desk, and it also means that you can easily find any items you are looking for.

  • Little and often

Once you have decluttered and reorganised your workspace, the best way to keep on top of it is to declutter little and often – spending a few minutes at the end of the working day will mean you start the following day with a clean, tidy and productive work area.

Many local businesses find self-storage is useful to archive all items and store equipment that don’t need on a day-to-day basis, giving them the reassurance they are kept safe and secure and close to hand when they do. Contact us to discuss our self-storage solutions for local businesses.
