New to Self-Storage? 10 Packing Tips to Get You Started

Self-storage can be a lifesaver, whether you’re downsizing, decluttering, or preparing for a big move. However, if it is your first time using self-storage, figuring out how to pack effectively can feel a bit overwhelming. To help you make the most of your storage unit and ensure your belongings are safe and accessible, we have put together ten essential packing tips.

1. Choose the Right Boxes

Invest in sturdy, high-quality boxes of uniform size. This not only makes stacking easier, but also ensures that your belongings are well-protected. Avoid overloading large boxes, and instead pack heavier items in smaller boxes to prevent injury or box breakage. We sell a range of boxes and packing materials to help.

2. Label Everything

Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. Consider creating an inventory list, either on paper or digitally, to keep track of everything in your unit.

3. Use Protective Wraps

For fragile items, wrap them in bubble wrap, packing paper, or soft linens. Stack dishes vertically rather than flat to reduce the risk of breakage. Don’t forget to fill empty spaces in boxes to prevent items from moving.

4. Disassemble Furniture

If possible, disassemble larger furniture like beds, tables, and shelves. Keep screws, bolts, and small parts in labelled bags and tape them to the corresponding furniture to make reassembly easy.

5. Use Vacuum-Sealed Bags

Clothing, bedding, and other soft goods can take up a lot of space. Vacuum-sealed bags compress these items, protecting them from dust and maximising your storage space.

6. Pack Strategically

Place heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter ones on top to prevent boxes breaking. Items you may need access to should be placed near the front of the unit, while less frequently used items can go in the back.

7. Avoid Overpacking

Overstuffing boxes or stacking too high can lead to damage or even accidents. Make sure everything is stored securely and that the stacks are stable.

8. Protect Against Moisture

While our self-storage units are dry, it’s always a good idea to take precautions against moisture. Use silica gel packets or moisture absorbers, especially if you’re storing items like electronics or documents.

9. Secure Valuables

All our sites have full CCTV security and each unit is secured with a padlock which we give free to new customers, however for particularly valuable or sensitive items, you could consider using a lockbox within your unit.

10. Plan Your Layout

Leave a pathway through the unit for easy access to all your belongings. Use shelves or stack boxes neatly to maximise vertical space while keeping the unit organised.

Packing for self-storage doesn’t have to be stressful. By planning ahead and following these tips, you can ensure that your belongings are safe, secure, and easy to retrieve when you need them. Happy packing!
